Move over world!\u00a0 There\u2019s a brand new tequila on the block and he\u2019s got a poisonous bite that is strikingly smooth and his name is Crotalo<\/strong>.\u00a0 In this special \u201c2-fer Tasting\u201d<\/strong> edition of the TEQUILA WHISPERER Show<\/span>, Th\u2019 Lip <\/strong>tastes all ages of this feisty newcomer, and ends the episode with \u201cThe Great Sun Chips Sound-Off\u201d<\/span> contest to see if those compostable Eco-bags were REALLY<\/strong> as loud as consumers complained they were.

You may recall that Lippy<\/strong> discovered Crotalo<\/strong> tequila quite late in the evening of his \u201cSprits Of Mexico\u201d festivities.\u00a0 Exhibitors were actually taking down tables and packing up bottles(the horror!) when he stumbled upon the ONE brand that was still open for business.\u00a0 And good thing, too \u2013 because the first taste of that Crotalo<\/strong> anejo was enough to reset his mightily soggy palate and bring him startlingly straight back to his \u201ccenter\u201d, thinking, \u201cThis Crotalo<\/strong> has really got something going on\u201d.\u00a0 Just how MUCH is going on with this brand?\u00a0 Watch and see!<\/p>\n

GENERAL TASTING NOTES:<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Crotalo<\/strong> starts with a triple-distilled plata<\/strong> product that is rested for 45 days in their \u201cproprietary\u201d oak barrels. (Try as he might, Th\u2019 Lip<\/strong> was unable to wrest the secret of those \u2018proprietary\u2019 barrels out of the fine folks at Crotalo)\u00a0 Normally a triple distillation will remove a lot of the interest and complexity out of a tequila, but in the case of Crotalo<\/strong> they seem to have gotten it just right.\u00a0 The plata<\/strong> attack on the palate is soft and quiet in the front with a ton of spice and some heat hitting the back of the tongue and throat on the swallow.\u00a0 The reposado<\/strong> is aged 11 months (5 in French oak, 6 in \u2018proprietary\u2019 oak) and does a wonderful trick on the palate: it fills in that frontal attack with sweet spice and a pleasing amount of wood while maintaining the heat at the back.\u00a0 The repo<\/strong> completely holds its own as stand-alone product that commits to a flavor related to but not beholden to the plata<\/strong> or the anejo<\/strong>.\u00a0 The anejo<\/strong> similarly stakes a bold flavor claim and introduces a vegetal ,almost mushroomy tang.\u00a0 It is aged a year in French oak, then finished for 15 months in their \u2018proprietary\u2019 oak.\u00a0 Nice work, Crotalo!<\/strong> This anejo<\/strong> is sitting right in Lippy\u2019s<\/strong> flavor \u201csweet-spot\u2019. Look for their 5-year and 7-year limited edition products to become available in coming months.<\/p>\n
