Don Diego Santa blanco, reposado, anejo (episode 41) tequila review

If they were giving out BEAUTY PAGEANT-like awards for the “Best-Looking Bottle”, Don Diego Santa tequila would be in the top 10 for sure.  It’s got a svelte profile with a lot of well designed text and other fine graphic treatments.  Sure, this little Honey looks great in your tequila collection.  But how about the JUICE INSIDE? Well that’s where Th’ Lip comes in.

In this episode Lippy breaks down the flavor profile from this tequila made at one of his favorite “treasure bottle” distilleries, NOM 1124.  Watch and learn as he compares this current juice with some of his favorite dusty bottles from the same “fabrica”.  Also making its “TW” debut is the “Salt Shotz” shot glass.  It’s 100% pure pink Himalayan salt fashioned into a drinking vessel!   Then marvel at the power of the mighty Tequila Whisperer Community as a massive gaggle of young Trolls crash the party  and are summarily shown the door by Th’ Lip and his new “Sergeant at Arms”.  One thing is for sure when you’re doing a LIVE show —  ANYTHING can happen!  Oh, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show up to debut their new CD, “Mojo” in its entirety.  Good stuff.

TEQUILA STATS:

BRAND: DON DIEGO SANTA

NOM: 1124

AGAVE SOURCE: Highlands

GENERAL TASTING NOTES:

Don Diego Santa blanco features a fuerte attack with a “cigar-ashy” spice on the back of the palate that leaves a slight bitter finish.   Not a lot of agave flavor in any of the ages.  The repo and anejo however, have none of the ash profile and add a healthy dollop of thick, sweet oak to the proceedings.  In fact the reposado and the anejo have VERY similar flavor profiles.  The anejo tones down the massive oak load but introduces a slight side taste of toasted chocolate.  Both of these ages have a lot to recommend and Th’ Lip is committing to that recommendation.  Especially for the price, these two ages are in the solid “buy” category.
